E: Now, I am going to give you a topic. And I’d like you to talk about it for one to two minutes. Before you talk, you will have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes if you wish. Do you understand?
S: Yes.

E: So, I’d like you to des, I’d like you to describe a time when you first talked in a foreign language … Alright, remember, you have one to two minutes for this. So, don’t worry if I stop you. I will tell you when the time is up. Can you start speaking now, please?
S: OK. So, the time when I first talked in a foreign language and I would probably choose a time when I first speak… Putonghua at Taiwan. There was a trip with my family together. And really quite a long time ago, four years ago, probably yeah, I was with my family at Taiwan. And most of them don’t know how to speak Putonghua, but, I, I know coz I learn it at school and I… I was, I was talking about are… actually, I was bargaining… {Laughter} with the ... with the... you know, with the… people at the shop. And my pa, my parents ask for a cheaper price, and I have to do the translator in the middle, and I have to explain, tell them, “Oh, can you… get us a cheaper price for that?” So, and also, I also use the Putonghua for asking different kind of direction. And… about how I f… felt about that, I, at first, I was a bit… shy. I don't really want to… talk, you know, e… even in front of my family, so all my family member is here. But I'm the only one who can communicate with them. But I’m… I feel like, oh I'm so shy. I don't know whether I pronounce very well. But then… you know, I am forced to do it, coz if I didn't spoke up, then no more one will help us. So, then I, I still kept on talk it in Putonghua to communicate with different peoples at there, but then the more I say it out I, I feel more comfortable, and also the people there, in Taiwan, people are very nice. They even praised me that, “Oh, you speak very well on Mandarin”. So, then I feel Better after I speak more. Yeah.

E: Thank you. Do you often speak foreign languages?
S: I often speak foreign language. I… I think yes, actually, you know, my mother language is Cantonese, but foreign language can be English and Putonghua. You know... there are a lot of time I have to communicate with friends. Some of them are not local people, so I still have to talk with them in English or Mandarin. So, quite often I do talk in foreign languages. Yeah.
