E: Now I am going to move on to part three of the speaking test.
S: OK.

(0:08 - 0:28)
E: We’ve been talking about a place you’d like to visit, and I’d like to discuss with you one or two more general questions related to this topic. Let’s start with the topic, trans… traveling to less familiar places. What sort of advantages are there to reading about a country before you visit it?
S: I think before you go there, it is very necessary that you check some information about that place, for example, the, the weather, the culture. That is the most important, because sometimes you might encounter some culture shock, which will {inaudible} effect other people.

(0:50 – 1:05)
E: Do you think most people do research before they visit another country?
S: Yeah, I think so, but there are still some people. They like, like, traveling by group, {Um-hum} with some travel agencies.

(1:05 – 1:16)
E: Do you think those don’t do any research? They just turn up?
S: I am not sure, but most of them just follow their group, and listen to their advice and their route.

(1:16 – 1:47)
E: Do you think having a guide or going on a tour group improves the quality of the experience when you travel?
S: Not really. I like, like… I like traveling by myself, to explore this place or the culture by myself. But sometimes, I think having a guide is good, because you need local people to talk about the, the culture, for example, or the history of the place {Hum}. If you travel by yourself, you, you don’t know that.

(1:47 – 1:55)
E: Do you think most people prefer to travel by themselves or to go in a group?
S: I think young people prefer traveling by themselves.

(1:55 – 2:04)
E: Why?
S: They are more adventurous, and they have more energy to check further information.

(2:04 – 2:12)
E: Do you think older people prefer to traveling to groups?
S: There are always some exceptions. {Um-hum} {laughing}

(2:12 – 2:42)
E: Do you think… do you think people learn more from visiting important sites or from meeting local people when they travel?
S: I think from meeting with local people, because sometimes the important and famous sites are, are promoted by the local government or something. It is… it might not be like that, but speaking with local people, you do find more.

(2:42 – 2:59)
E: Let’s talk about tourism in general. Do you think the government should protect historical places of interest to encourage more tourists?
S: Yes, of course, {Um-hum} because history belongs to all of us and also our ancestors, we should protect them.

(2:59 – 3:12)
E: Do you think that the money spent on protection is the wasted money?
S: No, never. I think it is necessary, {Um-hum} because once you destroy it, it will never come back again.

(3:12 – 3:27)
E: We, we could use the internet and look at pictures on the internet and research through the internet. {Um} We actually need to have the building?
S: Yes, but I think sometimes it’s… those places are worth seeing.

(3:27 – 3:54)
E: Do you think there are any disadvantages of there being a lot of tourists visiting one place?
S: Yes, the, the environment. Too many visitors may {lip smacking noise} happen to bring too mu… too many pollutions, and it might have a, a threat to the local people, their own culture, their lifestyle, and also their old way of economy.

(3:54 – 3:59)
E: OK, well, thank you. Time is up. That’s the end of the speaking test.
